Hope is the last refuge of those who rely on a benevolent future. Hope doesn't go the distance when there is no expectation of a "later". When we are in the present we are in our cups be it a radiating love or galvanizing fear. It is a timeless state of being. We might be dead or we might be the most alive we have ever felt in our skin. When we are not in the present we are often hoping to be in some kind of future because our present feels so unbalanced and overwhelming. So we have hope where we might require a sense of trust.
A human being's relationship to time is complex and extremely varied depending on how the soul wants to wend its way through the life. It depends on the relationships established and the way the life is held as it is lived. It depends on how the individual life story melds with the universal story of humanity. Being a decent human being is often hard and though we signed up for it, we mostly forget that. We are thick, weighty, and cumbersome and often confused as we struggle with time and our place in it. Some of us have a faint memory of a kind of freedom that is so rare it cannot be named and this fuels our imagination to keep us afloat and aloft and moving forward. Some have no memory nor could care less.
Hafiz delegates the symbol of a bird to this omnipresent freedom that he imagines. The bird has a life less structured and weighted and it has access to realities we can only imagine. The bird does not need hope. The bird trusts. It is a living promise of omnipresence. The bird exists and has license to hold a much higher, refined vibration.

Music: Most people realize by now that this song Blackbird was written by the Beatles in response to the plight of the Americans of color who were fighting for their long overdue rights to be recognized as human beings in the 1960's. It is an ode to a people unjustly burdened in chains, for sure. I chose it for this post because of that and because it suggests a kind of freedom to aspire like a bird in flight who is able to reach higher vibrations. Hope is holding space with the strength of those who stand firm in the present. It is being fully in the the present and holding conviction that allows time to incorporate our vibrations and intentions for evolution. It isn't done by wishing.
